GHS Centenary 2020

Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School was founded in 1920 and continues to be a leading high school in our country and, in 2020, we celebrate our Centenary.

Our beloved school will turn 100 years old in 2020. Looking back over the years, GHS has always been at the forefront of change and transformation. This is largely because of the excellent educators in the classrooms, and the exceptional alumni who have gone out into the world, breaking boundaries and continuously flying the GHS flag high, not only across the country, but across the world too.

Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School is a dynamic environment, offering wonderful, diverse opportunities for the development of each individual. We are a proudly South African school, led by highly-qualified and dedicated educators who guide our learners to maintain a balance between their academic, sporting and cultural endeavours. We believe that it is imperative to educate the future generation of female leaders, to take their rightful place in society and to be well-equipped trailblazers.

As part of our Centenary celebrations we are committed to resetting our school’s prominence in the educational landscape. While we are well-known and well-loved, we are committed to showcasing all that we offer, through our new website, our first ever school video and our virtual tour. We also have our first male principal, thereby resetting the school for a different leadership experience after our phenomenal female principals who have laid a solid foundation for our school over the last 97 years. Our house names changed this year to better reflect a unified culture, free from the negative history that was associated with some of the old house names. We are resetting ourselves for the next 100 years.

We will continue to remain committed to building and strengthening relationships with various stakeholders both internally and externally. Our learners and staff are key players in rebuilding passion for and pride in the school. We will also strive to rebuild strong and meaningful relationships with our parents, whom we value greatly. Together we can all play our part in keeping our “green machine” running smoothly for the next 100 years.

An important goal is to reconnect with our alumni. Over the years we have relied solely on reunion days to catch up with them; however, we now have a platform, AlumNet, where we encourage all our alumni to register. Here you will get the latest news from the school, hear about what other alumni are achieving in the world, and keep up to date with our events.

All this culminates in our Centenary theme; “Reset. Rebuild. Reconnect.”

We hope you are as excited about our Centenary as we are.
